Retain7 for Claude Code
Shared memory for Claude Code
Every Claude Code session starts with your repository and nothing else. What you decided last week, the approach that already failed, and what a teammate settled in Cursor are not in its context, so you explain them again.
How it works
One memory, shared across your tools
Add Retain7 once as an MCP server. Claude Code searches the team memory before it answers and saves decisions as short typed memories. With the optional hooks, each session opens with the last handoff and ends by writing a new one.
Saved in Cursor
Use UUID primary keys on every new table.
Found in Claude Code
The next session searches before it answers, so the decision is already in its context.
An example memory, not customer data.
Setup
Add Retain7 to Claude Code
A minute or two, once. The same steps are in the docs.
-
Run this once in a terminal. It adds Retain7 for every repository.
claude mcp add --transport http --scope user retain7 https://retain7.com/mcp
-
In Claude Code, type /mcp, pick retain7, choose Authenticate and approve in the browser.
-
So every session checks the team memory before it answers, add this line to ~/.claude/CLAUDE.md:
This team keeps its project memory in Retain7. Before answering how this project does something, call the retain7 memory_search tool.
Works with the rest
Your team does not have to use Claude Code
A project has one memory. Whatever the tool, the same decisions and failed attempts come back.

Questions about Claude Code
Do I need a token for Claude Code?
No. After you add the server, Claude Code signs you in through the browser. A personal token is only for headless machines where no browser is available.
Can Claude Code see what my team saved from Cursor?
Yes. Memories belong to the project, which Retain7 finds from the repository's git remote, not to a tool. Anything saved from Cursor, Codex or ChatGPT for that repository is searchable from Claude Code.
What do the Claude Code hooks do?
They are optional. At session start the hook sends the repository's git remote so the briefing matches the project, and when a session of two minutes or more ends, a handoff is saved from the last message.
Can a secret end up in the memory?
Saves that contain API keys, tokens, private keys, passwords or connection strings with credentials are refused before anything is stored.
