Retain7 for Windsurf
Shared project memory for Windsurf
Cascade remembers what it learned in your workspace. A teammate's decision from another tool, or the approach that already failed on this repository, never reaches it unless someone pastes it into the chat.
How it works
One memory, shared across your tools
Add a retain7 entry with serverUrl to mcp_config.json and sign in when Windsurf asks. Cascade then searches the team memory before it answers and saves new decisions where your teammates' agents find them.
Saved in Codex
Run database migrations in a transaction.
Found in Windsurf
The next session searches before it answers, so the decision is already in its context.
An example memory, not customer data.
Setup
Add Retain7 to Windsurf
A minute or two, once. The same steps are in the docs.
-
Add this to ~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json, or open it from the Windsurf MCP settings:
{ "mcpServers": { "retain7": { "serverUrl": "https://retain7.com/mcp" } } } -
Refresh the MCP list in Windsurf and sign in when it asks. Approve in the browser.
-
So every session checks the team memory before it answers, add this line to ~/.codeium/windsurf/memories/global_rules.md:
This team keeps its project memory in Retain7. Before answering how this project does something, call the retain7 memory_search tool.
Works with the rest
Your team does not have to use Windsurf
A project has one memory. Whatever the tool, the same decisions and failed attempts come back.

Questions about Windsurf
Which file do I edit for Windsurf?
~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json. You can open it from the MCP settings in Windsurf.
Why does the Windsurf config use serverUrl?
Windsurf uses serverUrl for remote servers. Retain7 is a remote server, so there is nothing to install.
Do I need a token for Windsurf?
No. Windsurf signs in through the browser. A token in an Authorization header is only for machines with no browser.
Does Cascade's own memory conflict with Retain7?
No. Cascade memories stay on your machine. Retain7 holds what the whole team saved, and Cascade searches it when it needs an answer.
