Retain7

Retain7 for VS Code

A team memory for VS Code agents

The chat agent in VS Code only knows the files you have open and the instructions you gave it today. A teammate's decision in another tool, or last week's dead end, never reaches it.

How it works

One memory, shared across your tools

One terminal command registers the server with VS Code, and it asks you to sign in when it starts. After that the agent can call the memory tools, and a line in your custom instructions makes it check them before it answers.

Saved in Codex

Staging resets every Sunday at 02:00 UTC.

Found in VS Code

The next session searches before it answers, so the decision is already in its context.

An example memory, not customer data.

Setup

Add Retain7 to VS Code

A minute or two, once. The same steps are in the docs.

  1. Run this once in a terminal, then sign in when VS Code starts the server.

    code --add-mcp '{"name":"retain7","type":"http","url":"https://retain7.com/mcp"}'
  2. So every session checks the team memory before it answers, add this line to your Copilot custom instructions:

This team keeps its project memory in Retain7. Before answering how this project does something, call the retain7 memory_search tool.

Questions about VS Code

How do I add Retain7 to VS Code?

Run the code --add-mcp command on this page once, then sign in when VS Code starts the server.

Where do I tell the agent to use the memory?

Add the one-line rule shown in the setup to your Copilot custom instructions, so every chat checks the team memory first.

Is the memory per workspace or per team?

Per project. Retain7 matches a repository by its git remote, so every workspace and tool on that repository shares one memory.

Can viewers on my team read it too?

Yes. Viewers can search and read memories, but their agents cannot save new ones.
