Retain7

Retain7 for Pi

Shared memory for Pi

Pi keeps its harness small on purpose, so a session starts with your files and its context and little else. What a teammate's agent learned in another tool, or what already failed last week, is not in it.

How it works

One memory, shared across your tools

Add one server to mcp.json and run pi mcp login. Pi's MCP tools then search and save to the same project memory as the rest of your tools, and a line in your AGENTS.md makes it check the memory before it answers.

Saved in Claude Code

Never mock the database in feature tests.

Found in Pi

The next session searches before it answers, so the decision is already in its context.

An example memory, not customer data.

Setup

Add Retain7 to Pi

A minute or two, once. The same steps are in the docs.

  1. Add this to ~/.pi/agent/mcp.json:

    {
        "mcpServers": {
            "retain7": {
                "url": "https://retain7.com/mcp"
            }
        }
    }
  2. Then sign in. Pi opens the authorization page and waits for approval:

    pi mcp login retain7
  3. So every session checks the team memory before it answers, add this line to your AGENTS.md:

    This team keeps its project memory in Retain7. Before answering how this project does something, call the retain7 memory_search tool.

Questions about Pi

Does Pi need an extension to use Retain7?

No. Pi has built-in MCP support configured in mcp.json, so Retain7 is one more server entry.

How do I sign in to Retain7 from Pi?

Run pi mcp login retain7, or /mcp login retain7 inside a session. Pi opens the authorization page and waits for approval. Over SSH you can paste the redirected URL into the sign-in screen.

What about a machine with no browser?

Use the token setup: pi mcp add with --bearer-token-env-var RETAIN7_TOKEN keeps the token in your environment instead of the config file.

Is the Pi setup global or per project?

The user-level file, ~/.pi/agent/mcp.json, applies everywhere. A project can override it with .pi/mcp.json once you grant project trust.
