Retain7

Retain7 for Cursor

Shared project memory for Cursor

Cursor rules hold what you wrote down in advance. They do not hold the decision made in yesterday's chat, the fix that failed, or what a teammate learned in another tool, so each new chat rebuilds that context from scratch.

How it works

One memory, shared across your tools

Install the server from the Add to Cursor link and sign in when Cursor asks. Cursor then searches the shared memory by meaning and by keywords, and saves new decisions where your whole team and their agents can find them.

Saved in Claude Code

Feature tests run against Postgres, never SQLite.

Found in Cursor

The next session searches before it answers, so the decision is already in its context.

An example memory, not customer data.

Setup

Add Retain7 to Cursor

A minute or two, once. The same steps are in the docs.

  1. Add it with one click, then sign in when Cursor asks.

    Add to Cursor
  2. Or add this to ~/.cursor/mcp.json yourself:

    {
        "mcpServers": {
            "retain7": {
                "url": "https://retain7.com/mcp"
            }
        }
    }
  3. So every session checks the team memory before it answers, add this line to Cursor Settings, Rules, User Rules:

    This team keeps its project memory in Retain7. Before answering how this project does something, call the retain7 memory_search tool.

Questions about Cursor

Does Retain7 replace my Cursor rules?

No. Rules are instructions you write by hand. Retain7 holds what agents and teammates save as the work happens, and agents search it when they need an answer.

How do I add Retain7 to Cursor?

Use the Add to Cursor link on this page, or paste the server URL into your mcp.json yourself. Cursor opens a browser sign-in the first time.

Do my teammates need Cursor too?

No. A teammate on Claude Code, Codex, VS Code or ChatGPT reads and writes the same project memory.

Who approves what Cursor saves?

New memories wait in a review inbox until an owner or admin approves them. A project can auto-approve once you trust the flow.
